Through our Strategic Support Program, Accountability Counsel supports the struggle of communities in northwest Bangladesh who are opposing the Phulbari Coal Mine, the first planned open-pit coal mine in the country, a project of GCM Resources.
Accountability Counsel assisted with the complaint to the United Kingdom’s OECD National Contact Point regarding human rights abuses associated with the project. On June 14, 2013, the UK NCP accepted the complaint regarding the Phulbari Coal Mine.
The UK NCP published its final decision in November 2014, finding that GCM violated its duties to engage and communicate with the public. The full decision is available here.
We partnered in our work with an international coalition of groups, including International Accountability Project and World Development Movement (now Global Justice Now), along with local partners in Bangladesh.
